Message from the Principal
Welcome to Ryde East Public School.
We are very proud of our school!
Ryde East has developed, over the years, a sound tradition of pronounced academic, sporting, cultural and social achievement. We are an environmentally aware school with attractively landscaped surroundings containing modern and relevant educational facilities.
We support a close relationship between the school and community and actively encourage you to participate in this relationship by visiting the school, joining in our activities and taking an active interest in your child’s education. Effective communication opportunities are a vital part of our relationship. Please contact the school for an appointment if you ever wish to discuss matters relating to your child’s educational needs with either myself or staff.
Finally, it is our wish that you and your family will enjoy many positive, rewarding and enriching years with us at Ryde East School.
Jane Imer
Principal
Foreward
The central aim of education is “to guide individual development, in the context of society, through recognisable stages of development…” Aim of Primary Education.
Individual development is a complex process, which includes intellectual, physical, emotional, social, aesthetic, moral and spiritual development. Development takes place in stages, and children may vary considerably in their progress through these stages.
The needs of children vary as they move from one stage to the next. The period during which children are beginning their schooling is one of great significance. Not only are their minds being trained to receive the impact of education, but their emotions are being subjected to a considerable strain in the change from association with parental care and affection to the spending of comparatively long periods in the presence of teachers who are virtual strangers.
The change in status of teachers from strangers to helpers and friends is the vital role of the people involved in early education, as well as their essential role of commencing education. As children progress from the egocentric stage, when they cannot appreciate abstract social and moral concepts, through the stage when they have a growing ability to see things from different points of view, develop concepts and solve problems, the teacher’s role must change to meet the demands of the individual moving towards maturity. So, as children progress in stages, not ages, we as teachers must relate our teaching to the student’s stage of development.
What is the role of the kindergarten teacher?
The teacher’s role is to:
- ensure that the first year of school is a positive experience for children
- create a positive learning experience
- nurture individual children’s development
- identify the stage of development of each child in the following areas:
· physical
· emotional
· social
· intellectual
· language
- identify the particular factors, which will affect the growth and development of the individual child.
- set realistic long and short term teaching/learning objectives based on information gathered about individual children
- create links between individual children’s previous experiences and the learning program
- plan and implement a teaching program which will develop each child’s knowledge, skills and attitudes in all areas of his/her development and which can be seen as part of an on-going process, building on previous experiences and preparing the child for future learning.
- inform parents/guardians about the learning process and about their children’s progress at school
- involve parents/guardians in the learning process
When can I talk to staff?
The executive staff is available for interviews before school from 8.30am (except Wednesday) and at other times by appointment. Offices are situated in the main administration block – Mrs Abdulla, School Administration Manager, will direct you. For minor concerns please contact the class teacher. This can be done before or after school or by appointment. For major concerns please make an appointment to see one of the assistant principals.
What are the school hours?
School begins at 9.15am and finishes at 3.15pm. Punctuality is VERY important.
If children are late they must report to the Office with a parent/guardian and sign the Late Arrivals Book and obtain a late arrival slip before going to their classroom. If students need to be out of school during school hours for any reason, parents need to report to the office to obtain an early departure slip before going to the classroom to collect the student.
Children should not be at school before 8.45am unless attending O.O.S.H. (Out of School Hours Centre). In an emergency situation, children arriving at school prior to 8.45am must sit on the seats in the Infants playground or be sent to O.O.S.H.
Each morning at 9.15 the children assemble outside their classrooms. Please assist your child to develop the skills of independence by leaving them prior to the morning bell.
Recess 11.15am – 11.35am
Lunch 1.15pm – 2.00pm
In an emergency, if parents are late, children should be directed to wait in the administration building
Do children need special lunch containers?
For morning tea, Kindergarten children need a drawstring cloth bag which can be purchased from the uniform shop. A plastic box and drink container is best for lunches. Please do not include sweets in children’s morning tea or lunch. All bags and containers must be named.
Where do children have lunch?
Class teachers supervise the children while they are eating lunch. The children sit at the picnic tables (which were financed by the P & C) in shaded areas close to classrooms. The class teacher dismisses the children to the playground after they have had time to eat their lunch.
On rainy days the children eat in their rooms and teachers (using a “buddy system”) supervise.
Canteen
Ryde East School Canteen promotes healthy eating. We have a good range of lunch items and our snack foods are generally low in salt, fats and sugar. Fresh items are used as much as possible.
The canteen is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Lunch order bags and price lists are available at the canteen.
Our canteen is operated by a canteen supervisor and parent volunteers. Two people per day are needed, so we are always looking for helpers. Rosters are organised at the beginning of each term and an “Early Bird” and “Late Bird” system for helpers who can only stay for 2 hours has been introduced. Working at the canteen is an excellent opportunity to be involved with the school and our children. All help is very much appreciated. If you have any questions or would like to help, please let the school office know and a member of the Canteen Committee will contact you.
How does my child order lunch from the Canteen?
Parents are requested to write the order on a canteen bag and place money inside the bag. Orders are to be placed in a canteen basket located in classrooms.
Baskets are collected by canteen monitors at lunch time and lunches are distributed by teachers.
Kindergarten children are discouraged from using the canteen during term 1 while they become familiar with school routines.
What curriculum does the school use?
Our curriculum is divided into 6 Key Learning Areas (see Handbook), as prescribed by the New South Wales Department of Education and Training.
What forms of positive recognition are given to children?
There is a K-6 reward system to encourage positive behaviour and citizenship.
Each teacher has their own reward scheme and children will from time to time receive stickers, stamps, stars, etc.
In assembly each week merit cards are awarded, 1 per class, usually for citizenship or for effort.
Teachers may also send students to the principal or other teachers for special rewards.
Children learn at different speeds and teachers cater for these individual differences in their programs. Children often show spurts of learning then plateau for a while. You will be amazed how quickly they develop formal learning skills.

What happens if my child is sick at school or is hurt in the playground?
Children will be given any emergency First Aid at school. If your child is ill and it is felt they would be better at home the parent or “emergency contact person” will be notified.
In case of an accident, the same procedure will occur. If we are not able to contact you and emergency care is required, medical assistance will be sought (see emergency card).
If emergency contact details change at any time this information needs to be given to the school office to save time in contacting a parent or alternative adult. In case of illness or injury speedy contact with parents alleviates distress for students.
What happens if my child requires medication?
Medication can only be given with the written permission of the parent.
Wherever possible medication should be administered before or after school, please see your doctor regarding this. If it is absolutely necessary for students to have medication during school hours it should be labelled clearly with
-
the name of the child and his/her class
-
the name of the medication
-
specific instructions (including dosage) for administration
Medication should be in its original packaging and wherever possible should be timed for recess and/or lunch time.
Medication should be delivered to the school office. Please do not leave it with the child or in their bag. Please inform the class teacher of any medication being taken by your child.
What if it is necessary for my child to be absent from school?
Parents must notify the class teacher in writing of any student absence. It is not necessary to ring the office unless it involves a long term absence or an emergency.
A Home School Liaison Officer based at Northern Sydney Region Office, monitors school attendance.
Appointments with doctors etc. should be arranged for out of school hours. When it is unavoidable that a child attends an appointment during school hours, a note should be sent to the class teacher and the appropriate form should be collected from the school office before collecting your child from the classroom.
Permission may not be obtained to attend lessons such as swimming, dance etc. However, special permission for exams may be sought from the Principal.
What is a mufti-day?
On these days children do not wear school uniform (but must still have sensible shoes on their feet – NO THONGS).
Mufti days are held approximately once a term. These days are fundraisers for charity causes. Children are then asked to bring a “gold coin” to donate for the privilege of being out of uniform.
How do I know if my child is making progress?
Interviews may be arranged at any time if you have concerns regarding your child’s progress.
Student work is regularly sent home with the children, and assessment examples are collated during each semester to be discussed at interview times. Half yearly interviews and reports are prepared by classroom teachers and issued to parents as an indicator of their child's progress during the semester.
Is additional help available for my child?
If you are concerned about your child’s progress at any time, please discuss it with the teacher.
The following specialist services are available:
- School Counsellor – liaises with classroom teachers, assesses children referred to him/her by a teacher (after parent permission is given), interviews parents and guides them in seeking appropriate specialist help.
- Support Teacher Learning Assistance (S.T.L.A.) – works with children experiencing difficulties – providing individual programs to be implemented either in the classroom, by parent helpers or at home.
- The English as a Second Language Teacher (E.S.L.) works in classrooms to support children for whom English is their second language.
- The Learning Support Team is responsible for providing support for students who are experiencing difficulty in some aspect of school life by:
· liaising with parents
· arranging assessment by the school counsellor & the STLA
· liaising with class teachers
· making recommendations for other support agencies e.g. speech
therapist, occupational therapist
School Staff
A list of school staff is included in the first newsletter of the year.
Staff Development Day
At present we have 3 Staff Development Days per year, which are held on the first day of Terms 1, 2 and 3. These are designated pupil free days and we request that you make alternative arrangements for your child/children on these days. O.O.S.H. is usually available if you are unable to make other arrangements (there is a charge).
Where can I look for lost property?
Lost property is stored in the foyer in Block A (block facing Twin Road car park) and is available for collection between 8.45am and 9.15am each day. All clothing with a legible name is returned to its owner at the end of each term.
It is wise to check your child’s belongings regularly, as the name does wash off. All unclaimed lost property will be donated to the Second Hand Uniform Shop.
Do kindergarten children use the library?
All classes have a timetabled Library lesson. Children may borrow during this lesson and also at lunch time. A library bag will be needed. This should be a cloth drawstring bag of a size suitable to carry a large storybook.
Parents are encouraged to visit the Library during Education Week and are usually invited to purchase or donate a book for the library. A presentation sticker acknowledging your family’s donation is placed in the front cover.
What health services may be available through contact with the School?
- Referral – Teachers and Counsellors (after consultation with parents) will refer students to health specialists as required
- Dental Care – Save our Kids Smiles is a dental screening program offered to Kindergarten and Years 2, 4 and 6 every alternate year
What are some of the school activities in which my child is likely to be involved?
- Cultural Performances – Visiting artists/groups will visit the school to present appropriate cultural performances (2 times per year). Cost $4.00 to $9.00 each performance.
- Excursions – Teachers will often reinforce a learning program with an excursion (e.g. visit to the zoo).
- Physical Education – A fitness program including gross motor, health hustle and P.E. lessons.
- Banking – Each week on Thursday child have the opportunity to take part in the school banking scheme. School banking is conducted by parent volunteers.
Other Information
- Please make sure ALL your child’s possessions, even shoes and socks are clearly labelled with their name. This assists your child and saves frustration for you, searching through ‘lost property boxes’.
- A material smock, or better still, one of your old shirts is required for painting activities.
- With the shirt it will help if you shorten the sleeves and attach Velcro to the neck of it.
- Throughout the year you may be asked for various items for use in craft activities. Wrapping paper, cardboard cylinders, ribbon, egg cartons are popular items. Some parents find it useful to have a box and save items that may be useful.
- Children sometimes like to share their birthday at school with their class. It is best to send patty cakes, or iceblocks. Please do not send a whole cake that needs to be cut up. Please mention it to the teacher so that a suitable time may be organised. (The teacher will let you know the number of children in the class.)
- Out of Bounds Areas – We as a school, take great pride in our gardens. The children care for them themselves and therefore we ask that you supervise your pre-schoolers carefully and keep them off the gardens.
- After School Activities – The school rents its facilities to a number of groups, which provide additional activities for children to participate in outside school hours such as:
Tennis coaching Music tuition
Aerobics Drama
These activities are advertised in the school Newsletter which is distributed to the eldest child in the family each Tuesdays. Look out for it!
Is there parking available within the school grounds?
There is no on-site parking facilities for parents. The car parks in Twin Road and Badajoz Road are for staff only. Parents may park in Twin Road and Badajoz Road. It may be busy when parking in the street but parents are requested to please observe the parking restrictions.
Children entering the school from Twin Road must use the walking path between the buildings (not driveways).
Parents should not use the school car parks to pick up and drop off children.
