SPECIAL FEATURES
* The school is situated in large grounds with attractive playing areas and playground equipment. Well maintained sporting facilities including two multi-purpose courts and a full size oval provide opportunities for a range of activities.
* There is close co-operation between families, the community and the school.
* A committed teaching staff plan and implement the curriculum which works towards students reaching their potential for their stage of development. The staff development program at the school enables teachers to acquire knowledge of new curricula and further develop their skills.
Specialist Teaching Staff
A Support Teacher Learning Assistance, and an English as a Second Language Teacher supplement the work of classroom teachers. One support class is located within the school grounds.
An attractive well equipped library is the information and literature centre of the school.
A teacher librarian is employed 4 days per week.
A school Counsellor is based at the school 2 days per week. Where needed, referral to the counsellor is made by the class teacher after parental permission has been obtained.
Gifted and Talented
Students have the opportunity to participate in enrichment activities in the Key Learning Areas. Musical, sporting, dramatic and artistic talents are enhanced through the school program. There are two composite G & T classes 3/4 and 5/6. Students can be nominated by parents and/or teachers to sit for tests which determine entry into these classes.

Students participate in a range of physical activities aimed at developing a variety of sport orientated skills. As skills are developed, students are given the opportunity to participate in school and inter-school competitions.

Computers
Students have opportunities to use a variety of software in activities related to the key learning areas of the curriculum.
Computers stimulate creativity, produce an appropriate problem-solving environment, encourage discussion and communication, as well as being used to practice skills and reinforce learning in the key learning areas.
A computer network containing 23 multi media computers connected to the internet is located in the library. All classes have regular access to this facility.
Students in years 1-6 are taught to develop their own web-page using a program called “Eduweb”. Written work, movies and work are included on these web pages. All students at Ryde East Public School are involved in a developmental computer skills program each week.
Environmental Education

Environmental education is an important part of the school program and is currently involved in a "greening" program sponsored by Ryde Council.
The spacious grounds and close proximity to Field of Mars Studies Centre give increased opportunities for students to develop an involvement with, and an appreciation of the environment as well as an awareness of major environmental issues.
Students actively participate in recycling activities.
Charities
Through the support of selected charities such as Stewart House, an appreciation of the needs of others is developed.
Parent Involvement
The school has an “open door” policy, welcoming your participation and support. Teachers are available for interviews to discuss matters relating to student progress.
We very much welcome any assistance parents are able to offer in classrooms.
Some of the areas where parents are able to offer assistance are:
* supporting the class teacher with supervision of maths/reading groups
* acting as a source of information e.g. nurse, sailor . . .
* working with a group of students e.g., craft , art activities.
* becoming a mentor for a student with a specific talent e.g. musician, scientist . . .
* providing an audience e.g. watching a class performance, debating
* overseeing a project
* reading to students, or listening to them read
* developing skills in another language
* sport coaching, managing of teams
* any hidden talent you may wish to share
Working Bees are organised throughout the year to assist in the maintenance of the school and as a social opportunity for members of the school community to meet together.
Many parents participate in important school committees, such as Finance, The P&C Executive, Annual School Report, Grounds, Fundraising, Canteen, Staff Selection Panels.
Student Involvement
A Student Representative Council meets weekly to discuss students’ needs and make suggestions for the future development of the school.
Gold Cards
A reward system of Gold Cards operates at Ryde East School, where students acquire 3 yellow flower awards to obtain 1 merit certificate. Once they have been awarded 3 merit certificates, either by trading 3 flower cards or being awarded merit certificates at weekly assemblies, they are then given 1 Gold Card. 3 Gold Cards will result in a school banner. These are cumulative during the student’s school years. Students will save the cards at each stage and put them in a gold box in the office.

Detention/Caution Cards
The Principal and teachers ensure that students are aware of correct and acceptable behaviour within the school. The school welfare policy has a detailed explanation of circumstances for inappropriate behaviour. This can be warnings, time out, caution cards or detention.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Hours and Punctuality
Class hours are 9.15am - 3.15pm.
Playground supervision commences at 8.45a.m. Please refer to the Supervision of Students Policy at the end of this document for further details.
Students are encouraged to arrive at school between 9.00 and 9.15am.
On occasions, students may arrive at school after 9.15. When these situations arise, parents/guardians/ and/or carers and students are requested to report to the office and sign the Late Book and obtain a pink, late arrival slip before students go to their classroom.
It is necessary to supply a written explanation for a student's absence.
If students need to be out of school during school hours for any reason parents need to report to the office to obtain a yellow, early departure slip before going to the classroom to collect the student.
In an emergency, if parents are late, students should be directed to wait in the office area.
Out-of-School Care - 9878 3773
For a minimal fee, Out-of-School Care is available both "before" and "after" school, for students aged between 5 and 12 years. The centre is staffed by a supervisor and assistants with a maximum ratio of 1 staff member to 15 students.
Families are encouraged to use the Out-of-School Care facility if students need to arrive at school prior to 8.45a.m.
Students need to be “registered” with OOSH to use this facility.
Emergency Cards
An "Emergency Card" for each student is maintained in the office.
On occasions it is necessary to contact parents if a student is ill or requires medical treatment. If parents are unavailable, the school will contact the other nominated contacts as recorded on the card.
Please assist us to maintain accurate information by informing the school of any changes to phone numbers, addresses, etc.
Pedestrian Crossing
Pedestrian crossings on Twin Road and Badajoz Road are supervised from 8.30a.m. - 9.20am. and 3.00p.m. - 3.30pm.
All students crossing Twin Road and Badajoz Road are to use the supervised crossings.
Parking
There is no on site parking facilities for parents. The car parks in Twin Road and Badajoz Road are for staff only. Parents may park in Twin Road and Badajoz Road. When parking in the street, parents are requested to observe the parking restrictions and do not park across local resident’s driveways. Please do not use the New Horizons car park in Twin Road.
Entry to the School
Parents and students should enter the school through the front gate in Twin Road or through the gate near the Dental Clinic in Badajoz Road. For safety reasons driveway entrances should not be used under any circumstances.
Bus Travel
Students who live more than 1.6km radial distance from the school or those who must walk 2.3km or more by the shortest practical route are eligible to apply for free bus travel. Details of eligibility and application forms are available from the school office.
Bicycles, Skateboards & Rollerblades
Students in Years 3-6 with parental permission may apply for a bike licence, through the Student Representative Council, to be permitted to ride their bikes to school. Students are not permitted to ride skateboards or roller blades to school. Out of school hours use within the school grounds is also forbidden.
Security
The school is equipped with an alarm system. School Watch also operates at the school with the support and approval of the security company. A number of volunteer parents patrol the school and grounds at night and on weekends to prevent vandalism.
The co-operation of the school community and local residents is appreciated in encouraging respect for school property.

Student Medication
If regular medication is required, please discuss arrangements when enrolling your child.
Medication can only be given with the written permission of the parent.
Wherever possible medication should be administered before or after school, please see your doctor regarding this. If it is absolutely necessary for students to have medication during school hours it should be labelled clearly with
* the name of the student and his/her class
* the name of the medication
* specific instructions (including dosage) for administration.
Medication should be in its original packaging and wherever possible should be timed for recess and/or lunch time.
Medication should be delivered to the office. (Please do not leave it with the student or in their bag.)
Please inform the class teacher of any medication being taken by your child.
Student Absences
Parents must notify the class teacher in writing of any student absence. It is not necessary to ring the office unless it involves a long term absence or an emergency.
Infectious Diseases
From time to time students may suffer from a communicable illness eg chicken pox, that will require them to remain at home for a statuary period of time.
The NSW Department of Health or the school will provide you with details .
UNIFORM
The uniform has been selected following consultation with parents, students and staff. Students are encouraged to wear the correct uniform at all times, as we believe it promotes a positive school tone. The wearing of jewellery is discouraged for many reasons – it can be caught in play equipment which may cause serious injuries; it can be broken during sporting activities; or it may be lost in the playground which causes distress to the student.

The importance of ALL of your child's possessions being clearly marked with their name is stressed.
School Assemblies
Regular school assemblies provide the school with the opportunity to recognise student achievement. Merit certificates and other awards are presented to students on a weekly basis. From time to time classes or groups will present an item.
Excursions
With the approval of the Principal, educational excursions are planned for students to enhance their learning.
Parents or guardians are provided with written details, including the venue, required clothing and level of supervision. Written approval is required before students are permitted to attend.
Visits from approved performing artists are arranged as part of the school's cultural and musical program.
Opportunity is provided for Years 5 and 6 students to attend a Department of Sport and Recreation Camping Program or an overnight excursion.
Homework
Homework is seen as the responsibility of the student. It can encourage student interest, extend knowledge and develop skills as well as enhancing study habits.
The decision to set homework is the responsibility of the individual teacher and is outlined in a school policy document and during parent teacher meetings/interviews.
Office Hours
Office hours are from 8.45a.m.until 3.30p.m. , however on Wednesday mornings there is a whole school staff meeting from 8.30a.m. – 9.15a.m. The office is unattended during this period.
Parent -Teacher Communication
The education of your child is a team effort to which the family and school are committed.
If at any time you have a concern regarding your child, we ask that you contact the school, by phone or in writing, to arrange an interview with the teacher or Principal.
Discussion can avoid misunderstandings.
The school newsletter is a valuable method of relating information of forthcoming school activities. It is distributed each Tuesday.
Parents will receive
- a "term planner" outlining activities planned by the school
- a grade overview outlining the core educational outcomes students will work towards during the semester.
Half yearly interviews and reports are prepared by classroom teachers and issued to parents as an indicator of their child's progress during the semester.
Parents' and Citizens' Association
P&C meetings provide opportunity for community involvement in the schools activities. Meetings are held on the 4th Monday of each month in the staffroom.
The following activities are organised by P&C Committees;
* Canteen
- staffed by a convenor and parent volunteers, Monday, Wednesday and
Friday
- open for counter service at recess and lunch time.
* Fundraising
- to provide facilities and equipment which enhance the quality of
education for students of Ryde East.
Activities e.g. Mothers’ and Fathers’ Day stalls, Sausage Sizzle Days,
Chalk Day, Spellathon or Walkathons, Discos and Fetes are very
popular events.
* School Uniform Shop
- operated at the canteen. It is open every Tuesday 8.45 - 9.45am.
* Second Hand Uniform Shop
- operated at the canteen. It is open every Tuesday from 9.00 – 9.30am.
* Annual Band Festival
- Each year our annual Band Festival attracts schools from a wide area.
The bands perform and compete in different categories and it is always
a fun filled and prestigious day for the school.
* Discos
- Three or four discos are held in the school hall each year. These are
always well attended and are popular with the students.
* Mothers’ and Fathers’ Day Stalls
- Parents organise a Mothers’ Day or Fathers’ Day stall each year.
* Calendar and Family Portraits
- At the end of the year parents organise Calendars, using their children’s
artwork, for families to purchase, a great gift idea. Parents also organise
sittings for family portraits.
* Fete / Family Fun Night
- Each year the P & C organises either a fete or mini fete or major fund
raiser. These events cater for all members of the school community.
